Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this letter finds you and your family enjoying a healthy and relaxing summer! The letter is to keep everyone informed as to the direction Lenape Technical School is planning for 2020-2021 school year. Administration appreciates those who have completed the Parent Survey Regarding the Re-Opening of School. If you have not yet please take a few minutes to complete the survey which is located on our website.
This summer has been like no other as we plan to educate students in a time and under conditions that are unprecedented. Guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) continues to update, and when that happens, we adapt and do everything we can to meet that guidance to the greatest extent possible. Additionally, we worked collaboratively with each of our sending districts to develop a Health and Safety Plan that supports their corresponding plans to give each of the families a similar set of expectations for students to return to school.
On Thursday July 23, 2020, the Lenape Technical School Joint Operating Committee approved our Health and Safety Reopening Plan. The Health and Safety Plan is on our website for your review. The Health and Safety Plan has all students attending school each school day for in-person instruction. While this plan sets the groundwork and most conditions for a return to school on Thursday August 20th. Please understand we are monitoring the situation daily and may need to make adjustments as conditions dictate.
Our Health and Safety Plan required us to describe what school will be like in “Yellow” or “Green”. In “Red” status, there will be no in-person instruction. All instruction will be delivered remotely.
In both, “Green” and “Yellow” phases, students will attend school for in-person instruction as scheduled on the 2020-2021 school calendar. In “Yellow”, additional requirements and frequency of cleaning and sanitation, use of “shared” or common equipment is limited, limitation of visitors, and other services will be changed for the safety of students, staff, and the community.
The main issue facing our plan, is that while the “Green, Yellow, or Red” status may not change, other mandates may be placed which requires the school to re-examine how we can safely and appropriately conduct meaningful in-person instruction. This includes the use of face coverings by students:
At this time, the requirements for face coverings to be worn in public applies to the school setting as well. Students and staff will be required to wear face coverings, but may remove them when are:
- Eating or drinking when spaced at least 6 feet apart;
- Seated at desks or assigned workspaces at least 6 feet apart;
- Engaged in any activity at least 6 feet apart.
The only exception for this requirement is for Special Education Students or medical conditions that make it unsafe to wear a face-covering. Should your student be in one of these categories, please contact Mrs. Carla Thimons email@example.com ASAP so we can work to meet each students needs.
Additionally, students will be required to wear a face covering during the entire duration of their trip on school transportation. Students will also be required to load the bus “back to front” to prevent passing students un-necessarily. More information on specific items to Transportation will be sent home with each student assigned transportation the week of August 10th. Additionally, this year students who can provide their own transportation may apply for their parking pass prior to school starting so they can begin driving to school immediately. The fee for a parking pass has been waived this year, but a parking pass is required to park on campus. Please see the Lenape Tech website for more information.
Please understand that this information was given to be as transparent as possible. Lenape Tech understands the need for hands-on learning, especially in our Technical Programs, but like all school districts, we are governed by PDE and must adhere to those mandates for in-person instruction to be possible. We continue work daily on creating safe conditions, better instruction, and continuity with our sending districts. While without a doubt, we want students back in our schools, we must be able to do so safely.
Lenape Tech will continue to update our families with additional communications as conditions evolve and more information is available to administration. Please continue to monitor our website and Facebook page for news and announcements.
Stay Healthy and Stay Well,
