Dear Parents and Guardians,
The mandatory closure of schools and the move to virtual instruction via online resources or paper packets has necessitated a significant change as to how student grades are calculated. As stated in our Continuity of Education Plan, the prevailing goal for our students during the closure is to provide activities that allow students to remain engaged in learning and growth until schools are permitted to re-open, and a sense of normalcy can return to our classrooms.
Additionally, as a career and technical center, there is no practical way to replicate the critical hands-on learning experience of our technical programs through long-term virtual learning or paper packets. This issue also prevented students from earning some industry credentials that require important hands-on demonstration of skills.
Based on these considerations, all Lenape instructors will be evaluating student work during the closure based primarily on evidence indicating the level of student engagement and their effort to complete the virtual assignments/home-study packets that teachers specifically designed to engage students in learning during the closure.
Planned Instruction (graded work) began on Monday April 20th. All work and assignments from that date until the last day of the 2019-2020 school year (May 22nd) is work that is required to be completed, either by online access or paper packets that were sent out to students by request.
Grades for Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 are not impacted in any way by the school closure. Those grades are already in place.
Grades for the first three weeks of Trimester 3 which occurred before the closure will remain part of the student’s overall Trimester 3 grade.
Final Trimester 3 grades will be determined by considering the overall level of completion of the Planned Instruction assignments, and the effort each student has made to remain engaged in their learning.
For all students, the final Trimester 3 grade will be reported as either “Satisfactory” or “Unsatisfactory.”

||Little to no effort made to complete Planned Instruction assignments, little to no contact with their instructors as documented by teacher, guidance counselors, and administrators
Final grades for all courses will be determined by averaging Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 with the inclusion of the Planned Instruction percentage.
An Unsatisfactory rating does not imply that the student failed the course. Instead, this is a representation of the level of effort the student made to continue learning during the closure.
For underclassmen in particular, this rating will assist educators with determining the level of remediation that may be needed during the 2020-2021 school year.
Without evidence that students remained engaged in their learning through the Planned Instruction modules, students will need additional time and support upon returning to school to make up for the work that was not accessed or completed.
No senior (12th grade) student will be prevented from graduating due to the COVID-19 closure.
Transcripts will reflect the necessary adjustments due to the mandated closure.
Senior Task-Lists from each technical program will reflect students performing “competent” in each completed task.
There will be some grading situations handled on a case-by-case basis and in the best interest of the student. However, any Unsatisfactory grade will be supported by documentation of our faculty’s attempts to communicate with parents/students due to our concerns regarding a lack of engagement or effort of students.
